In a race, the fastest runner should win. In an election, whomever has the most support should win. Under current election rules, highly unpopular candidates can (and do) win. AV is a system that will remove tactical voting and the spoiler effect, meaning we will (with any luck) see no more MP’s getting elected with 25,30,35% of the vote. If, hundreds of years ago, we’d had a referendum on democracy instead of just being given it, people like you would be telling us how “unfair, complicated and expensive” it all is.
