Great Expectations for 2012

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to stop and take stock of all that has happened in 2011 and to look forward to all that is yet to occur in 2012.

As we begin 2012 this constituency has much to look forward to. This year we will be celebrating the bicentenary of Charles Dickens. Rochester has risen to the occasion and we have numerous events to look forward to. With multiple talks and readings taking place throughout February (events which can be found at and what promises to be a spectacular Dickens Festival in June. The outstanding BBC adaptation of Great Expectations, sets a great precedent for what we will enjoy later this year.

In 2012 we will also witness the Queen’s diamond jubilee and if festivities are anything like those held in 2011 for the Royal wedding then there should be much to be enjoyed. Medway is also a top contender with its City Bid and we all hope that we will be successful in our application for World Heritage Status for Chatham Dockyard.

Finally in 2012 London will play host to the Olympics. The construction of the venues and the infrastructure are 92% complete, remaining well within the overall budget for the Games. Being so close to London, and having a high speed train link direct to Stratford, the area will undoubtedly play a significant role in hosting the Games, with sports teams training at Medway Park Sports facilities and the Olympic torch passing through Rochester on Friday 20 July 2012.

With all the excitement that 2012 has to bring I would like to wish all my constituents a very Happy New Year.
